Many take advantage of free ride home on NYE

The return of New Year’s Eve Free Ride Home kept nearly two dozen potentially drunken drivers off St. Joseph County roads last weekend.

The free service, offered over a six-hour period starting at 8 p.m. Friday, drew 20 riders. Rides were provided by the St. Joseph County Transportation Authority.

Agency director Allen Balog said the service was worth the expense, no matter how many or how few riders used the service.

Balog said 11 rides were provided by the Sturgis-based bus, while the bus positioned in the Three Rivers area gave rides to nine people. He said Buffalo Wild Wings in Sturgis and the Tomahawk Tavern in White Pigeon were two popular locations from which rides were given by the Sturgis bus.

He said the Three Rivers bus received ride requests from a number of downtown revelers.
