Teen arrested for blackmail

A teenager from England was arrested after attempting to blackmail a Branch County girl over an inappropriate photo sent via Snap Chat.

Michigan State Police troopers were dispatched Wednesday to a location in Sherwood Township. Authorities said an 11-year-old child accidentally sent an inappropriate photo to another person, claiming to be a 15-year-old female.

The suspect then started to attempt to blackmail the child to send more photos. The child alerted her parent, who called state police.

Troopers obtained a court order for the suspect’s Snapchat account, which yielded hundreds of photos and video files, including files of sexually-abusive material involving underage children other than the original victim.

The Department of Homeland Security assisted MSP with transferring the evidence to investigators in England. A 17-year-old male was located and arrested Jan. 20.
