Man sentenced for breaking into mother’s home

A Sturgis man was sentenced to up to five years in prison after using a hatchet to threaten his mother.

Alexander Plummer, 21, will serve 18 months to five years for breaking into his mother’s Balk Road home threatening to set it on fire in June 2021.

Defense attorney Tim George said, “meth took a stranglehold” on Plummer and he asked for intensive probation and treatment.

St. Joseph County Prosecutor David Marvin said Plummer is aggressive and has a tendency to be violent even when sober following a series of alleged incidents in the county jail.

Circuit Court Judge Paul Stutesman agreed with Marvin.

Court officials said Plummer’s mother told authorities he came back to her house after Stutesman pointed to numerous convictions for malicious destruction of property and drug-related offenses.
