Residence damaged in Sturgis fire

Fire heavily damaged a two-unit residence last week in the city of Sturgis.

According to fire officials, crews were called around 7 a.m. Thursday to the 100 block of West Hatch Street.

Upon arrival, fire crews found a two-unit residence with heavy smoke in the lower apartment and all occupants outside the home. Upon making entry to the structure, firefighters found heavy smoke and fire coming through the first floor through the basement.

Once crews gained entry in to the basement, the fire was quickly brought under control. A pet rabbit and cat were both rescued as operations were taking place.

Cause of the blaze is still under investigation, however, it does appear to have started near an electrical box. Due to heavy smoke, fire and water damage, the residence will be unlivable for some time.
