A Sturgis woman has been charged with tampering with a consumer product, United States Attorney Andrew Birge announced Tuesday.
Alison Marshall, 46, has been charged by a federal grand jury.
According to the indictment, while working as a registered nurse in the interventional-radiology unit of a hospital in July and August of 2020, Marshall allegedly tampered with bottles of fentanyl by removing the fentanyl from the vials with a syringe and replacing it with another liquid, knowing that the diluted fentanyl was to be dispensed to patients.
The indictment does not include other details of the offense.
Officials said the tampering offense is punishable by up to ten years in prison. If Marshall is convicted, a federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
An indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. The defendant is entitled to a fair trial in which it will be the government’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
