Carl Newton “Bud” Slocum, age 84, of Three Rivers, passed away Monday, March 28, 2022 at Three Rivers Health.
He was born on January 24, 1938 in Three Rivers and never left.
Carl married the love of his life, Kathleen L. Kastead, on April 14, 1973. Their union lasted 49 years.
He was in the Air Force Band for four years.
Carl loved to bowl and passed on that skill, helping young children learn to bowl for many years. He served as bowling secretary for 25 years, and was on two to three leagues until his average went down and he decided to retire instead.
His best time was coaching men’s baseball leagues for several years, but his highest moment was coaching his wife’s slow pitch league here in Three Rivers and going down to Fort Wayne for tournaments.
Carl belonged to the Three Rivers Moose Lodge so he could bowl on their league, did Friday night meals, and helped with Bingo.
Then he moved on and joined the Three Rivers Eagles Aerie #2303 for 43 years. He held many chairs and was president, helped the kids with Sunday breakfast, bingo, bowling banquets and many Eagles doings.
Carl really liked to watch TV – especially sports, Westerns (he truly loved John Wayne), and World War I and II movies. He took many trips around the United States with his nieces and nephews.
The light of his life was his wife, his many dogs, and a cat.
Remaining to cherish Carl’s memory are his wife, Kathy Slocum; brother, John Slocum; nieces and nephews Lynn Wetmore (Michele Schiebel) (children Jaxson and Gage), Lori (Jack) Lawson, Tom (Kathy) Wetmore, John (Kerri) Wetmore, Amy (Jeff) Mantia (children Steven and William), and Andy (Angie) Johnston (children Josh and Jeremy); and a special cousin, Sandra Easton, whom he took to the eighth-grade formal.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Isabelle (Hadley) Slocum; and sister, Mary Wetmore.
Kathy Slocum would like to thank all the people at Three Rivers Health for all the love and care they gave him, and the ones with him in his room.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, April 30, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at Riverside Cemetery with military honors by the American Legion Hice-Shutes Post #170. A luncheon will follow at the Eagles, 715 E. Hoffman St., Three Rivers.
Donations in Carl’s memory may be directed to St. Joseph County Animal Control or the Eagles.
Arrangements by Hohner Funeral Home.
