Recycling event a success

Saturday’s collection of electronics and household hazardous waste was deemed a success by event organizers.

Sponsored by the St. Joseph County Solid Waste Committee, the four-hour collection saw cars lining up an hour before the 8 a.m. start.

Pat Kulikowski, secretary of the solid waste committee, said electronics and tires were the most popular stations Saturday.

Kulikowski said 1,280 tires were collected. Meanwhile, the event generated about 25,000 pounds of televisions and monitors, but 40,000 pounds of electronics overall.

Meanwhile, approximately 8,000 pounds of household hazardous waste were turned in and about three-quarters of a semi trailer was filled with paper and cardboard.

Latex paint returned after a several-years absence. The result was 650 gallons.

Barring unforeseen circumstances, the county will offer another collection in October.

  1. Good program, but if vehicles are lined up an hour before opening, maybe we need more frequent recycling events.
