Ed McNew, 91

Edward B. McNew, age 91, of Sturgis, passed away early Tuesday morning, June 28, 2022 at Thurston Woods Village in Sturgis.

He was born December 11, 1930 son of the late Robert and Stella (Keck) McNew.

On June 14, 1951 he married Virginia Hunter in Monroe, Michigan. At the time Ed was serving his country in the U.S. Marine Corp during the Korean War.

Mr. McNew came to Sturgis in 1959. At the time he was working as a distributor for the Detroit Free Press covering south central Michigan and northern Indiana. In 1978 he left the newspaper business and established a construction company converting homes into apartment houses and remodeling them. In 1981 with his son Brad started McNew Real Estate Agency in Sturgis. He was licensed in both Michigan and Indiana and he also continued his rental business.

Ed loved the many functions and was a very active member of the Masonic Lodge. He was a life member of Meridian Sun-Eagle Lodge #49 F&AM, Sturgis Shrine Club, Saladin Temple of Grand Rapids, Royal Order of Jesters Court 11 of Grand Rapids and Consistory 32nd Degree Scottish Rite of Grand Rapids. He was also a past Commander and Secretary of Neuman-Wenzel Post #72 American Legion, D.A.V. Jack Johnston Chapter #88, life member of Captain John J. Kelley Post #1355 VFW and a member of the St. Joseph County Marine Corp League where he served as Vice Commander and the St. Joseph County Landlord Association.

He is survived by two sons: Brad McNew and his special friend Julie McPherson and Greg (Carrie) McNew both of Sturgis; grandchildren: Nick, Brandon, Michelle, Matthew, Rob, Carl and Misty; great grandchildren: Jordan, Zachary, Ian, Gregory, Elise, Caroline, Troy and Melissa; brother: Estel McNew of Monroe and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son: Mike McNew; Sister: Beth Ann Parrott and brother: James McNew.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Tuesday, July 5th at the Rosenberg Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes, 807 E. Chicago Rd. in Sturgis. A Masonic Memorial service will begin at 7:30 P.M. Tuesday with Meridian Sun-Eagle Lodge #49 F&AM officiating. Funeral services celebrating the life of Edward McNew will be held at the funeral home Wednesday at 10:00 A.M. The Chaplain Rodger Moyer of Thurston Woods Village will officiate. A committal service will be held at 3:00 P.M. Wednesday at the Roselawn Memorial Park Cemetery, 13200 S Dixie Hwy in La Salle, MI.
