Local pastor honored for service

The 60-year ministry of Rev. Wally Walsworth was celebrated earlier this month during a special service at Sturgis First United Methodist Church.

Friends, family, former parishioners and current worshipers at the church where he served as pastor from 1993-1995 were present to recognize his service, as well as the establishment of a scholarship at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, Evanston, Ill., in honor of his long ministry.

After leaving full-time pastoral ministry in Sturgis for a special appointment at Olivet College, Walsworth has continued in many non-clergy roles in the Sturgis church. He has served short-term interim pastoral appointments for Oshtemo, White Pigeon, Centerville and Three Rivers.

He continued teaching at Olivet College and Kellogg Community College’s Coldwater campus, with his official retirement from college-teaching and church appointments coming at the age of 80.
