Marie Katherine Patten, age 100, of Sturgis, passed away Friday, July 8, 2022 at Thurston Woods Village in Sturgis surrounded by her family.
She was born May 1, 1922 at home in Saginaw County, Michigan daughter of the late Carl and Emma (Seitz) Miller.
Marie began her education in rural schools for the first eight years and her final for years were at the Arthur Hill High School in Saginaw. Following her graduation she furthered her education at the University Of Michigan School of Nursing, graduating with the class of 1944.
She was employed as a Registered Nurse at the University of Michigan Hospital working in the operating room before coming to Sturgis in 1946. After her children were in school, she returned to nursing, accepting a position in the operating room at Sturgis Memorial Hospital where she was a dedicated employee for over 25 years.
In 1946 she married Herbert Blake Patten at the First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis. He preceded her in death November 3, 2008.
She was a member of the Nottawa District Nurses Association, Michigan State Nurses Association, Captain John J. Kelley Post #1355 V.F.W. Auxiliary and the Sew Bee It Club. For over 30 years Herb and Marie spent their winters in Texas in their motorhome. RVing was their greatest pastime. She also enjoyed sewing, gardening, crafts, reading, camping and spending time with her family.
She is survived by her children: Terry L. (Teena) Patten of Sturgis, Marlene D. (Michael) Taylor of Crawford, Texas and Kendal Scott Patten of Kennesaw, Georgia. Marie was blessed with seven grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 62 years, a son and daughter-in-law: Michael G. and Chevonne Patten, a great granddaughter: Lulu Patten, a brother: Donald L. Miller and nieces and nephews.
In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place. Private burial of the remains will take place at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Sturgis at a later date.
The Hackman Family Funeral Homes of Sturgis is entrusted with the arrangements.
