Baby-formula manufacturer Abbott Nutrition has announced plans to expand operations at its Sturgis plant.
Sturgis municipal officials recently approved a site plan for the 35,000-square-foot expansion. Abbott’s Sturgis plant is on North Centerville Road and the expansion will add to the facility’s warehouse building, a 1,060-square-foot water-treatment room and a boiler/compressor requiring in excess of 12,000-square-feet in space.
Circulation improvements and a new chemical drain are also part of the plans, according to Sturgis City Manager Mike Hughes.
Production of baby formula at Abbott resumed in July after shutting down in
February over contamination that contributed to a shortage nationwide. The Food and Drug Administration investigated four bacterial infections among infants who consumed powdered formula from the plant.
