Colon’s village office moves to new location

After operating for years in an undersized, double-wide trailer, Colon’s village office is now under a new roof.

Starting today, municipal services are being conducted out of a former doctor’s office at 111 St. Joseph Street, across the street from Abbott’s Magic. The relocation provides a quantity of space that was a critical shortage at the previous site.

Village president Sharon Craun acknowledged the inferior state of the previous village office, citing its woeful condition, numerous shortcomings and lack of space, factors that prompted the village to finally move forward with the acquisition of the former medical office. It had been vacant since earlier in 2021 and was secured at a cost of $180,000.

Under the circumstances, the village conducted its monthly council meeting Tuesday at the M-86 fire station. Craun said she is optimistic September’s village council meeting can take place at the new office.

Craun said the village will eventually seek bids for demolition and removal of the old village office, which has been in use since the mid-1970s.
