Sturgis Hospital considers changes

Sturgis Hospital is looking to change its operating model Jan. 1 from a traditional facility to a rural emergency hospital.

The hospital was saved from imminent closure earlier in the summer when the state provided financial relief to carry the facility to the end of the year.

The state’s help enabled the hospital to not only remain open, but work toward converting into an REH, increasing its opportunity to operate in the black to serve the community and to be more attractive to a potential partner or buyer.

The REH concept was recently approved through legislation, although the legislation does not take effect until Jan. 1. Until then, the hospital continues to look at ways to reduce costs, provide services and work toward its new role starting in 2023.
