Two injured in Cass County bus accident

Two people were injured after a school bus was struck by a vehicle Wednesday in Cass County’s Wayne Township.

Sheriff Richard Behnke said deputies were called at 6:43 a.m. to the intersection of Dewey Lake Street and Atwood Road.

Investigators said a Dowagiac Schools bus driver, 40-year-old Benjamin Hoopes of Dowagiac, was traveling south on Atwood Road. The bus contained four Dowagiac students and another adult, Roy Payne, 45, also of Dowagiac.

Hoops failed to stop sign at the intersection of Dewey Lake and the bus he was driving was struck by a car driven by 26-year-old Dowagiac resident Christopher Weber, who was traveling west on Dewey Lake Street.

Three students were turned over to their parents at the scene. The fourth student, along with Payne, were transported to Borgess Lee Hospital in Dowagiac.
