Colon American Legion receives donation

A seasonal resident who has spearheaded a number of local fundraisers recently made a donation in excess of $20,000 to the Colon American Legion.

Tim Taylor presented the funds last month to post commander Brett Johnson.

He said the Aug. 13 “Magic City Egg Fest” drew 20 cook-off participants and an estimated 800 spectators. Proceeds from registration for competitors and tickets for spectators wishing to sample the grilled foods went toward the $21,061 donation.

In addition to supporting local veterans on an as-needed basis, the Legion has always backed Colon High School, Taylor said. It is in the midst of an ambitious fundraiser to create a veterans park on South Swan Street at Palmer Lake.

Johnson said there is no specific designation for the donation. It will be placed into the Legion’s general fund and used as circumstances warrant.
