Gaylord R. Gangloff, age 93, of Mendon, died Saturday, October 1, 2022 at Thurston Woods in Sturgis. He was born in St. Marie, Illinois on June 8, 1929 the oldest of eleven children born to Charles and Edna (Shryock) Gangloff. He was raised on a farm in Oblong, Illinois. After high school he enlisted in the Navy, serving from 1946 to 1949. He then went to work for the Pennsylvania Railroad for three years, and re-enlisted in the Navy Reserve. He was married to Marilyn Althoff in Effingham, Illinois, and they were later divorced. Gaylord went to typesetter school in New York City and then worked for newspapers in Effingham and Champagne-Urbana. He owned and operated an auto repair shop until 1989, then was employed by the maintenance department at the University of Illinois. Gaylord especially enjoyed playing golf. He credited his longevity to being a member of the Catholic Church, and being a 65-year participant in Alcoholics Anonymous.
Gaylord is survived by five children, Philip Gangloff, and Thomas Gangloff both of Farmington, NM, Andrew (Beth) Gangloff of Mendon, Lori Williams of Naples, FL, and Angela (Matt) Osterman of Triplett, MO; 16 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; to sisters, Angelita Seamon and Patricia Moore; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Elizabeth; and by eight siblings, Charles “Buddy”, Norman, Jack, Ronald, Donald, Jim, Art, and Lee Allen Gangloff.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 on Saturday, Oct. 8, 2022 at the Eickhoff Funeral Home in Mendon with Rev. Monsignor Thomas Martin officiating. Military interment will be in Mendon Cemetery.
