Legislation would help make police windows bulletproof

State Rep. Christine Morse recently introduced legislation that, if approved, would ensure windshields and side windows of police vehicles are bulletproof.

The legislation, introduced to the state House last month, calls for a $25 million allocation to retrofit vehicles to comply with the bulletproof requirement.

The concept was originally brought up by the father of Kalamazoo County Sheriff Sgt. Ryan Proxmire, a Three Rivers native who was killed in August 2021 after being shot in his patrol car by a man wanted by authorities. The suspect fled from sheriff’s officials and a pursuit ensued.

Kalamazoo County Sheriff Richard Fuller pitched the idea to Morse, who was happy to propose such legislation.

Morse said half of the potential $25 million would fund the cost of installing windshields and windows in current Michigan State Police vehicles. The other half would be made available to agencies across the state on a grant basis.
