Man drowns in Cass County lake

A 50-year-old Cassopolis man drowned last week at a lake in Cass County’s Penn Township.

Sheriff Richard Behnke said deputies were called around 7:30 a.m. Friday to an area at Belas Lake, where a kayak was located adrift at the northwest corner of the lake.

The kayak was unoccupied but hunting and fishing equipment was floating near it.

Authorities investigated the area and located the kayak’s owner deceased below the surface of the water. He was identified as Terry Westphal.
