Marcia Blackman, 74

Marcia Ann Blackman, age 74, of Colon, passed away peacefully in her sleep at home on Thursday, October 20, 2022.

Marcia was born on March 28, 1948, in Detroit, a daughter to the late Lester and Dortha (Ball) Deisch.

Marcia attended both Sturgis and Colon High Schools. She then attended Glen Oaks Community College and then Western Michigan University where she would earn her master’s degree as one of the top 100 graduates.

On May 8, 1965, Marcia married her husband of 57 years, Glenn L. Blackman, in Union City.

Marcia was an art teacher in the Three Rivers school system for the better part of 30 years. After retiring from Three Rivers, Marcia taught one final year at Western Michigan University. In her tenure she was recognized as teacher of the year in Three Rivers, and Michigan Art Teacher of The Year in 1996 by the Michigan Art Education Association.

When Marcia wasn’t teaching, she was always busy. She was an active member of the Colon Garden Club and was responsible for the placement of the black top hats and rabbit ears all over town, as well as the building of the gazebo at Bordner Park, and the Colon Lions Club where she designed all of their magic week pins. Marcia was also a past member of the Colon School Board, Class Advisor for the Three Rivers class of 1979, she was a member of the Red Hatters, and was elected as Colon’s Citizen of The Year in 2014. Marcia enjoyed quilting and many various art projects at home, and she always did so while indulging in her favorite soda, TAB. Marcia also enjoyed traveling, and looking for her next antique. She was known for her large collection of creamers, and her teddy bear collection. Marcia, and three of her teaching friends, would travel around in search of antiques and would call themselves the Cruiser Babes.

Marcia is survived by her husband of 57 years Glenn L. Blackman of Colon, her son John (Michelle) Blackman, grandson Timothy Hiemstra, granddaughters: Virginia (Brandon) Stoddard, and Stephanie (Jeremy) Craker, six great grandchildren, many cousins, nieces, and nephews, sisters in law Marjorie Wolff, and Barbara (Bob) Folk, exchange student Carlos Correa, and so many special friends and classmates.

Marcia was preceded in death by her parents Lester and Dortha Deisch, and her in-laws Leonard and Lois Blackman.

Following in her wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, October 29, 2022, at 1 PM at the Colon American Legion Post 454. Interment will take place in Lakeside Cemetery. The family asks in lieu of flowers that any memorial donations be directed to the Colon Garden Club or the Colon Lions Club.
