Several details regarding a 13-mile project centering on U.S. 131 in St. Joseph and Kalamazoo counties were provided by Michigan Department of Transportation officials Wednesday during an information session at Schoolcraft Village Office.
Project manager Sarah Fedders said the $52 million project will begin at the Rocky River in Three Rivers next spring and conclude for the season at XY Avenue in Kalamazoo County.
In 2024, work will continue north into Schoolcraft and on to a reconfigured intersection at Shaver Road.
Fedders said the St. Joseph County portion will involve removal of a top layer and adding a fresh surface. Drainage issues will be addressed and so-called “Michigan Lefts” will be added at most intersections, including Heimbach Road.
She said additional work will be done at U.S. 131’s intersection with Wilbur Road/North Main Street. It, too, will feature Michigan-Left turns.
Total cost of the 13.5-mile project, to be done in three phases, will be more than $57 million.
A similar session featuring MDOT officials takes place 4 to 6 p.m. today at Three Rivers Area Chamber of Commerce.
