Shimmel Road culvert replaced

The centerpiece of a major project on a heavily traveled road in St. Joseph County was put into place last week.

Road Commission manager John Lindsey said a culvert measuring 99 feet long, 17 feet high and 21 feet wide was installed Friday as a key component of the Shimmel Road project.

The culvert, laid in an east-west direction, sits at a low point in Shimmel Road near Wilson Road in the southern section of Sherman Township.

Lindsey said the culvert replaces one that was more than 50 years old and in poor condition.

Cost of the project is about $650,000, Lindsey said, noting it is expected to be completed Nov. 7.
