Fatal crash in Mendon Township

A 6-month-old child died this week in a two-vehicle crash involving an alleged drunken driver in Mendon Township.

Sheriff Mark Lillywhite said deputies were called around 7 a.m. Tuesday to the intersection of M-60 and Angevine Road. Investigators said 30-year-old Samantha Adams, of Mendon, was driving a westbound vehicle on M-60 but was stopped waiting for oncoming traffic to clear before attempting to turn left onto Angevine Road.

A westbound vehicle driven by Jimenez Lopez, 24, failed to slow or stop and struck the rear of Adam’s vehicle. Authorities said Adam’s 6-month-old son, Alden, was transported to Beacon Health Three Rivers in critical condition and subsequently transferred to Bronson Methodist Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Authorities said Lopez was located in a corn field, about 150 yards from his crashed vehicle. Investigators said Lopez admitted to police and fire personnel that he had been drinking and was trying to evade police by crawling away from the crash scene.

He was identified as being a Mexican citizen in the United States illegally, authorities said, adding he did not have a valid driver’s license. Lopez suffered minor injuries and was treated at Beacon Health Three Rivers and Borgess Hospital.

Samantha Adams sustained minor injuries.
