Howard Stanley Grubka, age 94, of Mendon, died Thursday, Nov. 10, 2022 at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo. He was born in Mendon on March 13, 1928 the son of Joseph and Julia (Filas) Grubka. He attended country schools and Vicksburg High School before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force, where he served in Austria as a meteorologist. Howard was a life-long farmer and also worked at Ronningen-Petter in Portage for 26 years. He was married to Shirley Hook on Feb. 3, 1968 in St. Martin Catholic Church in Vicksburg. She passed away in 2008.
Howard enjoyed working with his hands building his own home, constructing the cabinetry and furniture, and creating the stone walls and landscaping. He planted many trees on the property to enjoy the wild-life and enhance the bird-watching. He was a gifted photographer, documenting nature and his annual fishing trips with friends to Canada. He enjoyed sports and was a dedicated Chicago Cubs fan. He also enjoyed raising several German Shepherds over the years. He was a life-long learner and watched the History Channel. He was known for his sense of humor and enjoyed his nightly “Sundowner” sip of Scotch.
Howard is survived by several nieces and nephews; and by a sister-in-law, Barbara Stafinski. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Shirley; four brothers, Alex, Harry, Joseph, and John Grubka; and by two sisters, Stella Makowski and Mary Makowski.
In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A private interment will take place next spring in Dutton Cemetery.
