Kate Winans, 80

Kate Winans, age 80, of Kalamazoo, passed away Monday, November 7, 2022 at MediLodge of Kalamazoo.

She was born in 1942 to Theodore and Mary Winans who lived in the town of Osborn, Ohio.  She was the third child preceded by 2 brothers, Robert and Joseph. Her younger sister Jane, to whom she became very close, joined the family in 1945.

Kate was a loving child, a trait carried on throughout her life. Her happiest days were those spent with the family during the visits to the family home in Colorado Springs—they were all young then and could hike the mountain trails and enjoy all that the area had to offer – even the wildlife.  She once came face to face with a bear that was busy sipping the sugar water from the hummingbird feeder on the front porch.  She calmly reversed course and reentered the house and in a low voice said “bear.”

As happens to many, age and health problems finally caught up resulting in the need to be in assisted living for much of her later adult life. The recent passing of her sister, Jane, also had a negative effect. Her brother, Bob, has fond memories of her as a child, as an adult, and as a sister, and regrets that they were not closer geographically. He knows she will be happy to be with Jane again.

Those remaining to cherish her memory include her brother, Robert (Barbara) Winans and her loving nieces and nephews.

In accordance with family wishes, cremation will be conducted, and a memorial service may be planned at a later date.

Donations in Kate’s memory may be directed to the Animal Rescue Fund of St. Joseph County. Envelopes are available at Hohner Funeral Home in care of her arrangements.
