Lonney “Lon” L. Sommers, age 82, of Three Rivers, died Friday, November 18, 2022 at his home. He was born February 22, 1940 in Battle Creek, a son of Leo and Dortha (Maugherman) Sommers.
Lon attended Battle Creek schools and served in the US Army from 1963 to 1965. On December 7, 1968 he married Valarie Propst at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in White Pigeon. Lon retired from Fisher Body GM plant in Portage in 1993. He previously managed the Clark stations in Three Rivers and Portage and worked at Brown Company, Kalamazoo and Galesburg Gas station. After retirement Lon began Lon Sommers mowing service which he operated from 1993 to 2019. He also provided maintenance and janitorial services at Locust Grove Mennonite Church. He was a member of Riverside Church, Three Rivers and a member of the men’s group. He enjoyed fishing and hunting especially with his hunting buddy Jesse whom he taught to hunt. Lon had a giving heart to family and friends and became a father figure to those he mentored.
Surviving are his wife Valarie Sommers, Three Rivers, daughter Stephani Webb, Sturgis, son Peter (Kelly) Sommers, Constantine, grandchildren Brandon Webb, Austin Shaver, Jesse Webb, Kasidy Webb, of Sturgis, Peter Sommers, Timothy Weatherwax and Breana Sommers, of Constantine, great grandchildren Ellenore Jean Webb, Colt Sommers and Omar Santiago Reyes, siblings Glenn (Sandy) Sommers, AZ, Darlene Stevens, Bellevue, MI, and Marty (Keith) Hoag, Battle Creek, many cousins in Michigan, Indiana, Florida and Virginia, several nieces and nephews. Lon was preceded in death by his parents, and son Justin Sommers.
Cremation has taken place. Relatives and friends will be received Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM at Eley Funeral Home in Centreville. Religious services will be held at 11A M Tuesday at Riverside Church Three Rivers, with Pastor Denny Kirouac officiating. Burial of ashes will be in Locust Grove Mennonite Cemetery in Burr Oak.
