Man found guilty in eluding case

A Three Rivers man who attempted to elude police last year has been found guilty of two charges related to the incident.

St. Joseph County Prosecutor David Marvin said Mark Shelton, 62, could face up to 15 years in prison after being convicted on two counts of resisting/obstructing police as a fourth habitual offender.

The incident happened during August 2021 when an officer from the Three Rivers Police Department attempted to arrest Shelton for an outstanding warrant. Shelton resisted arrest and fled on foot.

A responding officer caught up with Shelton, who once again failed to comply with lawful commands. Officers took Shelton to the ground, where he continued to resist, was tased and eventually apprehended.

Shelton was found guilty by jury Nov. 22 following a one-day trial before circuit court judge Paul Stutesman.

Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Casey Johnson tried the case on behalf of the People of the State of Michigan. Sentencing is set for Dec. 22.
