Marie Christine (Herzog, Schanen) Engeldinger, age 92, of Sturgis, sister of Barbara (Deacon Lawrence) Kasuboski, passed away early Thursday morning November 3, 2022 at Nu Care Assisted Living in Sturgis.
She was born April 1, 1930 in daughter of the late John M. and Theresa M. (Kohn) Herzog.
Marie moved from Wisconsin to Sturgis in 2019 to be closer to her sister Barbara.
Marie was only 16 when she suffered from polio during the epidemic of the 1940’s. Her high school education was delayed until she entered the convent of the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity at Silver Lake, near Manitowoc, Wisconsin, in her early 20’s. Her inability to climb stairs and kneel, and anemia cut short her convent life during her novitiate. After time of recovery at home, Marie moved to Milwaukee, where she lived and worked for many years for the City of Milwaukee at the Public Library and later at the Election Commission.
In 1965 she married Raymond A. Schanen, a professional bowler and commercial artist who preceded her in death in 1974. In 1983 she married Glenn V. Engeldinger, a retired Milwaukee fire chief who also preceded her in death in 1990.
Marie loved to sing, was an avid knitter, and enjoyed writing poetry and short stories. She loved attending plays and musicals and traveled extensively especially with Glenn after their marriage and during the time of her widowhood.
Marie is survived by her sister: Barbara (Deacon Lawrence) Kasuboski of Sturgis; brother-in-law: Thomas Kernen of Sheboygan, Wisconsin; nieces and nephews: Jeffrey Kernen of Plymouth, Wisconsin, Michael (Anna) Kasuboski of Shipshewana, Indiana, Joseph (Teresa) Kasuboski of Bennett, Colorado, Laurie (Randy) Hill of Enoch, Utah and Sister Mary Catherine Kasuboski of Toronto, Ohio and 10 great nieces and nephews.
