Her inability to climb stairs and kneel, and anemia cut short her convent life during her novitiate. After time of recovery at home, Marie moved to Milwaukee, where she lived and worked for many years for the City of Milwaukee at the Public Library and later at the Election Commission.

In 1965 she married Raymond A. Schanen, a professional bowler and commercial artist who preceded her in death in 1974. In 1983 she married Glenn V. Engeldinger, a retired Milwaukee fire chief who also preceded her in death in 1990.

Marie loved to sing, was an avid knitter, and enjoyed writing poetry and short stories. She loved attending plays and musicals and traveled extensively especially with Glenn after their marriage and during the time of her widowhood.
