Police investigate Sturgis fire

A person of interest was interviewed following a fire that partially destroyed a vacant building last week in Sturgis Township.

Tri-Township Fire Chief Max Kulpinski said officials were dispatched at 9:30 p.m. Thursday to the 26000 block of U.S. 12.

Kulpinski said crews arriving on the scene found the front half of the building on fire.

The fire was put out with the help of heavy equipment from Harker Excavating.

There were no injuries in the fire, Kulpinski said, noting that crews left the scene shortly after a three-hour period.

Cause of the fire is being investigated by the state fire marshal, Kulpinski said. Sturgis police identified a person of interest, who was reportedly found covered in soot, Kulpinski said.
