Sturgis delays search for city manager

Sturgis city officials have decided to delay action on whether to use a search firm to help them find city manager candidates.

Last week’s shift came after the commission conducted two executive-search-firm interviews Nov. 30.

Amy Cell LLC and Walsh Municipal Services were selected by the commission earlier in the month for consideration in guiding the city to replace Mike Hughes. Hughes is stepping down from the city manager position Jan. 20 to pursue new career opportunities.

Mayor Jeff Mullins proposed the brief wait until next month, after each firm noted there would be a gap between Hughes’ departure and the time a new city manager could be hired.

Assistant city manager Andrew Kuk is set to serve as interim city manager, Mullins said. However, Mullins also stated that waiting until the December city commission meeting would give Kuk time to decide whether he wishes to seek promotion as permanent city manager.
