Ken Malone will serve 2023 as chairman of the St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners.
During their first meeting of the year Tuesday, board members unanimously chose the Sturgis resident as head of the seven-member board. Malone, who has served four years on the county board, is a former mayor of Sturgis who spent more than 15 years on the Sturgis City Commission.
The 58-year-old Malone owns Advantage Water Service.
Meanwhile, Jared Hoffmaster was chosen vice-chairman. He is starting his third year on the board.
Malone and Hoffmaster, along with Luis Rosado, Rusty Baker, Rick Shaffer, Terry Conklin and senior board member Dennis Allen were sworn in at the onset of Tuesday’s meeting. They all will serve two-year terms.
I find it interesting that there are so many familiar names on this list. Many seem to be long time political figures that have discovered a continued 2nd job that pays pretty well and may give you a stepping stone to a much bigger salary. Not saying that they don’t have their constituents best interests at heart but there certainly seems to be a “good old boy” thing going on here. Ladies – where are you?
