Steven Lee Ammer, age 72, of Sturgis, passed away unexpectedly at home on Monday, January 16, 2023.
He was born Oct. 5, 1950 in Sturgis, a son to the late Heinz K. and Margaret Ruth (Stevens) Ammer.
Steven grew up in Sturgis, and graduated from Sturgis High School with the class of 1968.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, stationed in Berlin, Germany and earning the rank of SP5.
On Nov. 24, 1973 in Royal Oak, he married Melody Carol Miller. She passed away on May 2, 2022.
Steven had been employed for a short time at the Sturgis Foundry and he worked in maintenance at Telemark in Sturgis for 31 years before he retired. He also taught Industrial Circuits and Machine Tool Electronics part time from 1986 – 2004 at Glen Oaks Community College.
He was chairperson for the planning commission on the Fawn River Twp. Board, past president of the St. Joe Valley Old Engine Association Tractor Club, past Boy Scout Leader, and held his E.M.T. License.
Surviving are his children: Scott Ammer and Shannon Lindsey both of Sturgis, and two grandchildren: Vayda and Ethan Lindsey.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife: Melodye.
According to his wishes cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends and relatives from 5:00 to 7:00 on Thursday, Feb. 9, 2023 at the Rosenberg Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes, 807 E. Chicago Rd., Sturgis, MI 49091.
Private family Interment and full military honors will take place at Ft. Custer National Cemetery at a later date.
Memorial donations may be directed to the St. Joseph Valley Old Engine Association or the family to help with expenses. Envelopes are available at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes of Sturgis, who have been entrusted with the arrangements.
