Successful free ride home program

Nearly two dozen people in St. Joseph County decided a free ride home New Year’s Eve was an offer too good to pass up.

St. Joseph County Transportation Authority Director Allen Balog said 22 people took advantage of the agency’s annual, no-questions-asked program. The 22 riders was two more than a year ago.

The service was offered from 8 p.m. Saturday to 2 a.m. Sunday. Balog said Cowboy Up in Mendon Township and the Riviera Theatre in downtown Three Rivers appear to have yielded the most passengers.

It costs the CTA about $800 to support New Year’s Eve Free Ride Home. Balog gave a shout out to sponsors who financially supported Free Ride Home for New Year’s Eve and the night before Thanksgiving: Timber Cannabis of Three Rivers and Sturgis; Tomahawk Tavern of White Pigeon; In-Between Restaurant & Lounge, White Pigeon Township; Nottawa Gas; Confluence Cannabis of Three Rivers; Wings Etc. of Sturgis; Preferred Insurance Services of Three Rivers; and Frank Perez Insurance Agency, Sturgis.
