Barbeque competition returns to Colon

A relatively new tradition in Colon is returning this summer with a new name and taking place in a different month.

The Magic City Egg Fest, which has taken place three of the previous four years, is being rebranded and is now being called the Magic City Grill Fest.

Event organizer Tim Taylor, a Palmer Lake seasonal resident, said the barbeque competition started in 2019 and is evolving.

This year’s festival will include rounds of chicken and ribs, beef sliders and an open-round category that allows teams to prepare any of their favorite barbequed foods. Additionally, teams are allowed to bring two outdoor grills or smokers, as long as they do not use propane or electric, Taylor said.

Team fees are $100 and include six slabs of ribs, six whole cut up chickens, ten pounds of Waygu ground beef, slider buns, lump charcoal, fire starters and an array of spices, according to Taylor.

The event is scheduled to take place June 17.
