Six major grants landed in 2022 were highlighted during Tuesday’s St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners meeting.
James Hissong, who is contracted by the county to serve as its grant writer, provided details during his annual report.
Among the grants Hissong helped secure: an $85,000 award to fund a Jail Diversion Specialist position; more than $31,000 to support a campaign focusing on distracted and impaired driving, and seat belt and speed enforcement in which the sheriff’s department worked with Michigan State Police; $60,000 to help offset the cost of body cameras and data storage for the sheriff’s department; $10,000 to support spay/neuter services at animal control; and $12,000 to cover the cost of a new floor surface at animal control.
Hissong, who also serves as grant writer for the cities of Sturgis and Three Rivers, has been affiliated with the county since 2015.
