Vernon Ray Smith, age 64, of Three Rivers, passed away at Bronson Methodist Hospital on January 31, 2023. He was born in Indianapolis on December 4, 1958 the son of Vernon E. and Shirley (Dentler) Smith. Vernon lived in many places, including Kansas, California, Tennessee, Texas, Indiana, and Michigan. Vernon was an independent semi truck driver across the country for over 40 years. He loved being around family. Vernon was a goofball and was always a jokester. Vernon loved his dogs, Willie and Taco. He was particularly fond of visiting his uncle Jerry and aunt Chris Dentler in Parkville, MI.
Vernon is survived by his life companion and friend for 23 years, Lela Schwindt, two children; Tiffany Sorto and Christopher Smith. Siblings, Charles Miller, Debora Bennett, and Shawn Schwindt. Half siblings; Vicki Renner, Nancy Mellow, and Sandy Alexander. Step siblings; Richard Bond, Linda Bond, and Joseph Bond. Dear friend Elwin Wise, who was a fellow truck driver whom Vernon cared about deeply. He is also survived by his special cousin Kellie Smith and her husband Robert, whom he lived with in Michigan.
He was preceded in death by is parents, brother James Mason, daughter Jennifer Smith, grandson Omarion Smith, brother in law Josh Schwindt, and uncle Jerry Dentler. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
In keeping with family wishes, cremation has been conducted. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. It is suggested that memorials and donations be made to the family. Condolences and memories may be expressed to the family at eickhofffuneralhome.com
