Health department updates fees

The Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph County Health Agency last week increased fees for immunization and environmental permits for water, septic and restaurant inspections.

The revised fees take effect April 1.

Board member Tom Matthew expressed concern a $23 administration fee charged for each immunization shot would discourage people from seeking the service, especially children for receiving vaccine protection.

Health officer Rebecca Burns said the administrative fee covers syringes, clinic expenses and staff time in the complicated world of providing medical services.

Meanwhile, annual restaurant inspection fees increased by $40 to $435. New septic permits increased $38 to $235. New well permits went up by $18 to $215.

Fees for such permits in the three-county district were still below those charged in surrounding counties.

  1. What did they just do? Increase a few fees?
Restaurant ispection. Increase from $40 to $435? Septic permit. A 987.5% increase! Increase from $38 to $235? Well permit. A $518% increase! Increase from $18 to $215? A $1094% increase!
But, hey, shut your mouths and open your wallets because it’s still cheaper than some places?
