US-131 project set to begin

A two-year road project on a major route through St. Joseph and Kalamazoo counties will begin next week.

Michigan Department of Transportation officials said work on US-131 from the Rocky River in Three Rivers is slated to start Monday.

Agency officials said 13.4 miles of U.S. 131 will be under construction as part of the $51 million project. Phase one will start at the Rocky River and continue north to XY Avenue in Schoolcraft Township. In 2024, MDOT will resume work from XY Avenue north to Shaver Road.

MDOT’s Nick Shirripa said work will include repaving U.S. 131, joint repairs, drainage improvement and rebuilding all intersections as indirect left turns – colloquially known as “Michigan Lefts.”

Existing crossovers at intersections will be removed and new temporary crossovers will be built for the project, Schirripa said.

Traffic will be maintained in each direction throughout the project.
