Connie Woods, 87

Corrine Kay “Connie” Woods, age 87, of Sturgis, passed away Tuesday evening, April 11, 2023 at Sturgis Hospital.

She was born July 18, 1935 in Sturgis, daughter of the late Hugh “Sox” and Ethel (Lockwood) Carver.

When Connie was in the fifth grade the family moved to Hillsdale where she graduated from Hillsdale High School with the class of 1954. She continued her education at Hillsdale College where she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority, later transferring to Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo.

Following college she moved to Coldwater and had two children: Tracey and Steven. While residing in Coldwater she was instrumental in starting the Little League Auxiliary. She was also a Girl Scout leader, member of the Sigma Phi Gamma, and past president of the Jaycees.

Connie returned to Sturgis to accept a position with her uncle at Culligan Water Conditioning, later working with JoEllen Oster. For many years she volunteered her time at the visitor’s desk at the Sturgis Hospital.

Connie enjoyed most all sports and traveling to Florida. She loved time spent with her family especially times at the family cottage on Big Fish Lake in Sturgis. Growing up, Connie was a camper and counselor at Camp Fort Hill. Each Labor Day holiday she and her family camped at Camp Fort Hill, a family tradition spanning over 65 years.

She is survived by one daughter: Tracey Vaughan of Pontiac; one son: Steven (Alison) Woods of Lake in the Hills, Illinois and several cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister and brother in-law: Carol and Bill Martin.

In accordance with her wishes cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends from 12:00 to 2:00, Tuesday, April 18th at the Hackman Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes, 114 S. Nottawa St. in Sturgis where a memorial service celebrating the life of Corrine “Connie” Woods will immediately following the visitation at 2:00. A graveside committal will follow the service at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Sturgis.
