An unprecedented jackpot was awarded last weekend by the Colon American Legion.
With the license for its Queen of Hearts raffle expiring Sunday, the Legion had to draw a winner Saturday night for the jackpot that was in excess of $200,000.
Melvin Sours, whose community of residence is not clear, was the winner. After his name was drawn from thousands of tickets, Sours chose one of the two remaining envelopes out of 54 and the envelope contained the elusive card.
There had not been a winner drawn in 51 weeks, forcing the jackpot to turnover and continue to grow with every weekly drawing not yielding the queen of hearts playing card.
Sours took home half of the jackpot, while the Colon American Legion will keep the other half and put it toward a memorial to display at Swan Creek Park.
