Recycling event turnout exceeds expectations

Organizers of the semiannual electronics recycling and collection of household hazardous waste had no idea what to expect Wednesday, as the event for the first time in its 17-year history was held on a weekday.

Pat Kulikowski, secretary of the St. Joseph County Solid Waste Committee, said the turnout exceeded her expectations.

The collection was forced to a weekday because the company taking in household hazardous waste was unable to staff a Saturday event.

Kulikowski estimated final numbers for the household hazardous waste collection exceeded last spring’s 8,000 pounds.

Meanwhile, 1,300 tires were collected, surpassing 1,270 dropped off a year ago but short of the record 1,700 in 2021. In addition, about 500 cans of latex paint were turned in, down from about 650 cans in spring 2022.

About 40,000 pounds of electronics were collected, equal to the April 2022 amount.

The fall 2023 collection will be Oct. 28, returning to a Saturday.
