A request to raise chickens in the city received considerable attention at last week’s Sturgis City Planning Commission meeting.
The planning commission is tasked with drafting an ordinance to send on to the city commission for its consideration. A number of residents had asked the matter be revisited after previous proposals died for lack of support at the city level in 2011 and again in 2021.
With continued interest on the topic, city officials agreed to explore a proposed ordinance again, and to decide the best course of action should the city move forward: a city commission vote or a ballot proposal.
Those were two of many questions delved into Tuesday by the planning commission. No action came out of its discussion, although a consensus was made by the commission to continue future talks.
