Sturgis Hospital stops inpatient services

Sturgis Hospital is taking the next step to converting to a rural emergency hospital model.

Jeremy Gump, hospital board president, told the Sturgis City Commission last week that as of 7 a.m. today, the hospital will cease admitting inpatients.

The announcement was made to hospital employees April 25, Gump said.

Emergency services and lab services will continue, Gump said. In addition, he said the hospital continues to have hundreds of emergency room visits and thousands of lab services performed. Outpatient services will also continue, including medical imaging, from X-rays to mammography, physical therapy, general surgery and diagnostics.

An $11 million grant from the state announced June 30 kept the hospital afloat through 2022.

A rural emergency hospital, established by the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021, addresses growing concern over rural hospitals closing.
