Sturgis seeking grant for Sturges-Young improvements

Sturgis city officials last week agreed to pursue a grant worth more than $67,000 for ongoing improvements at the Sturges-Young Center for the Arts.

The grant, due for submission by Thursday, asks for grant funding from the Michigan Arts and Culture Council. If secured, the grant would go toward audio upgrades in the facility’s auditorium.

The center would be expected to provide a 50% match.

Projection upgrades were installed last year as part of ongoing renovations at the center, which opened in the mid-1950s. The proposed upgrades will add left and right line arrays, a new sound mixer and supporting equipment and cabling, as well as adding a set of assisted listening devices now required in all venues.

Stage Lighting and Sound Productions of Portage provided an estimate for the proposed work, at a cost not expected to exceed $135,000.
