Colon man sentenced following plea deal

A Colon man accused of killing his girlfriend in October 2021 will serve at least seven years in prison.

Michael Lafler, 37, was sentenced Friday to between seven and 15 years by Circuit Court Judge Paul Stutesman. Lafler’s sentencing was in connection to the death of 33-year-old Chelsea Wallen, who died at the Colon residence she shared with Lafler.

Prosecutor David Marvin and defense attorney Anastase Markou worked out a plea and sentence agreement last month for Lafler to enter a no-contest plea to involuntary manslaughter – homicide and assault to do great bodily harm less than murder by strangulation.

Markou had previously stated she was prepared to bring before a jury unflattering facts about Wallen and her relations with Lafler. Marvin said that forced him into the plea bargain because he was not willing to accept the fact that Lafler could walk away from trial free or serve only five years.
