Drug charges expected for two Sturgis residents

Two Sturgis residents are expected to be charged with drug-related offenses following an incident earlier this week.

Undersheriff Jason Bingaman said deputies stopped a motorcycle Sunday on Lafayette Street in Sturgis city limits.

Through the stop, deputies found the driver to be in possession of crystal methamphetamine. After further investigation, deputies conducted a search warrant in the 500 block of Cottage Street and located more crystal methamphetamine, along with an assortment of firearms.

Bingaman said charges will be sought against a 60-year-old female and 57-year-old male.

As a side note, Bingaman said drug overdoses continue to be a leading cause of death for people under the age of 50. He said the department is committed to getting drugs off the street.
