Jack Bargo, 90

Jack L. Bargo, age 90, of Sturgis, passed away Friday morning, June 23, 2023 at Ascension Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo.

He was born August 4, 1932 in Sturgis, son of the late Leon “Duke” and Helen Alberta (Basse) Bargo.

Jack was a lifelong Sturgis resident and a graduate of Sturgis High School with the class of 1951.

On November 19, 1955 he married Betty J. Donaldson in Sturgis. She preceded him in death September 24, 1998. On February 6, 2000 he married Joyce (Ehret) Grant.

He owned and operated Jack’s Marathon in Sturgis which was later renamed Jack’s Auto Service, for 43 years, from 1955-1998.

He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Sturgis.

Jack was proud to have served his country in the U.S. Marine Corp during the Korean War earning the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Battle Stars, the National Defense Medal, UN Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal.

He was a member of Captain John J. Kelley Post #1355 VFW and Neuman-Wenzel Post #73 American Legion. Jack had a love of the outdoors especially when he was fishing or hunting.

He is survived by his wife: Joyce; sons: Jack L. (Patti Colasanti) Bargo of Richland and Brion (Elizabeth) Bargo of Ramona, California; grandchildren: Michael Bargo, Erin (her Fiancée Nick Lambright) Bargo, Caroline Bargo and Wells Bargo; step-sons: Kevin (Linda) Grant of Wolcottville, Indiana and Kim (Debra) Grant of Goshen; sister-in-law: Barbara Ogle of Goshen, and nieces and nephews: Connie (Rick) Thurston, Jack Ogle, Sandy Ogle, Jill Stanley and Judy (Allan) Taylor.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents; wife: Betty; sons: Michael Joseph Bargo and Joseph Wayne Bargo; sister: Virginia Burke; step-son: William K. Grant; nephew: Doug Burke and niece: Sue Zeller.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00on Thursday, June 29th at the Hackman Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes, 114 S. Nottawa St. in Sturgis. Funeral services celebrating the life of Jack Bargo will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, June 30th at Trinity Lutheran Church, 406 S. Lakeview Ave. in Sturgis. The Rev. Jeff Springer will officiate. A graveside committal will follow the service at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Sturgis where full military honors will be conferred by Captain John J. Kelley Post #1355 and the U.S. Marine Corp Honor Guard.
