Cass County Animal Control is dealing with an overwhelming influx after taking in more than 200 animals discovered in a man’s home over the past 14 months.
Bobby Archer II, 39, is facing charges after 106 animals were found in his former Dowagiac home last year. WWMT News Channel 3 is reporting Archer faced similar charges on two separate occasions in the past decade.
Police arrested Archer again in June, after finding 107 animals in his Howard Township home while taking him into custody for violating terms of his probation in May.
Archer has not been charged in the most-recent case.
Many of the 213 animals have gone to the Cass County Animal Control after those incidents. His alleged pets this time range from dogs to chickens, rabbits and turtles.
Ronald Butts, Cass County Animal Control director, said the agency has had to lean on transfer partners in Michigan, Indiana and Illinois to create more space in the shelter, and to find the best fit for the species that were recovered.
Butts issued an appeal to the public, stressing a need for dog food and cleaning supplies. Donations can be dropped off at Cass County Animal Control.
