Election commission deems recall language clear

The first hurdle in an attempt to recall a pair of White Pigeon Township officials was cleared Thursday.

During a clarity/factual hearing before the three-member St. Joseph County Election Commission, the language of recall petitions against supervisor Don Gloy and his wife, treasurer Trudy Gloy, were deemed sufficient and clear.

As a result, those behind the recall attempt have until Aug. 4 to collect and submit signatures from at least 379 registered voters who reside in White Pigeon Township in order for the process to advance to the next step.

Thursday’s 25-minute proceeding was overseen by the county’s election commission, whose members are designated by state law.

In her petition against Don Gloy, White Pigeon Township resident Anita Casada indicated he failed last year to pursue American Rescue Plan Act funds being offered by St. Joseph County.

Regarding her recall petition against Trudy Gloy, Casada stated her effort is based on ethics. Casada made reference to a real estate transaction by Gloy in July 2022, when Gloy apparently purchased a vacant residential lot in White Pigeon Township, according to Casada.

The St. Joseph County Election Commission on June 27 rejected the petitions, stating language in the recall paperwork was insufficient and centered primarily on conjecture.

The Gloys have 10 days to appeal Thursday’s decision. Following the meeting, Don Gloy said neither he nor his wife will appeal.

The election commission, meanwhile, will reconvene at 9 a.m. July 26 for a clarity/factual hearing regarding the attempted recall of township clerk Lacie Pletcher, and trustees Jean Tefft and Vince Schroen.
