Arrests made in attempted smuggling at Lakeland prison

Michigan State Police and Michigan Department of Corrections have been conducting a month-long investigation into incidents involving drugs and cell phones being smuggled into the Lakeland prison in Coldwater.

Investigators received a tip about a potential attempt of drugs and/or a cell phone being thrown over a fence on the west side of the prison property.

Around 5 a.m. Sunday, troopers observed a vehicle stopped on Marshall Road. They saw a male subject exit the car. He was quickly apprehended by prison officials.

A female suspect attempted to flee in a car that was quickly stopped by state police.

Officials recovered controlled substances and cell phones, as well as additional evidence. The 28-year-old female and 59-year-old male are both from Detroit.
